Author Guidelines

Note: for the purposes of long-term referential integrity, if the author(s) wish to direct readers to any external, dynamic content (e.g. an interactive web site, a downloadable software program), these artifacts should be encapsulated by an appropriate collection of illustrative static materials, such as screen-capture images, and uploaded as collateral materials, along with the article submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The work submitted for publication has not in any form been published elsewhere nor is it under consideration for publication elsewhere. If accepted, must not then be published elsewhere in the same form. If previously published figures, tables or parts of text are to be included, the copyright-holder's permission must be obtained prior to submission. See also the terms and conditions in "Ownership and Copyright."
  2. You have included a full and a short title of the submission.
  3. You have include a list of 6 key words and an abstract of 250-300 words.
  4. You have submitted an essay that runs between 8000-1200 words
  5. Manuscripts are submitted as a Microsoft Word document (Times New Roman font, size 12, flush left, double spaced). The article should be saved using a number for the placement in the journal and the author's last name (for example: 02_Edwards.doc).

The text of submissions is formatted following the current Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (style 1, employing endnotes). Textual components of the submission should be in widely-used, standard formats.

Citations must be in endnotes (not footnotes). The endnote numbers at the end of the article should not be superscript text and note numbers must be followed by a period. Notes are the only type of formatting permitted.

Documents should be plain text and should not contain automated formatting. Please
do not try to design your article, the press will work on the design during composition. The more elaborate your article (with article openers and subheads in larger type sizes or typefaces), the more difficult and time consuming it will be for the press to remove before composition. Here are a few examples of formatting that should be avoided:
A. No function of "Track Changes" should be in use.
B. The "Style" field in the upper left corner should read "Normal" throughout the text. C. The "tab" key should be used for paragraph indentation.
D. Do not use automated lists. All numbers or bullets must be keyed.
E. Extracts should be set off with line spacing. Do not format an indent.

  6. Tables, figures, and photos are submitted in the original format (.tiff, .jpeg or .eps) at the size the author/editor would like them to appear.

Digital files must be saved as a separate file with an indication in the text for placement; i.e., <Table 1>, <Figure 2>, <Photo 3>.

Captions must be saved in a separate Word document.

Digital files should be saved in grey scale.

  7. Digital images are submitted at 300 dpi

In order for an image to be print-worthy, its resolution must be a minimum of 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the size the image is to appear in the journal. Because resolution is crucial to the image's print quality we cannot accept anything less. Remember: Most Internet sites post images at 72 dpi because they take up less space and still appear clear on the screen. Therefore, images taken from the Internet cannot be accepted for reproduction because the resolution is too low.
    How to check resolution:

MAC: Using "Preview" -> Tools menu -> Inspector (or Get Info) PC: Using "Microsoft Photo Editor" -> File menu -> Properties

  8. Full appendices and other related collateral materials, which may be in textual or non-textual form, are included with original submissions, and will be reviewed with the submission.
  9. You have not included your name, affiliation, or contact information on the manuscript. We use a double-blind review system. Please ensure that the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  10. Every feild in you submission metadata has been fully and formally completed. Including:

    Name
    Affiliation
    Country
    Bio statement
    Academic discipline and sub-disciplines
    Subject classification
    Geo-spatial coverage
Research sample characteristics: Type, method or approach
    Supporting Agencies Agencies

  11. Your submission includes a formal letter to the editor included in Author comments. In your letter to the editor, please include the names, affiliations, and contact information of at least three potential reviewers who can provide an unbiased evaluation of your work. If there is anyone you would like us to exclude as a reviewer please provide a reason. If we are unable to find peer reviewers for you submission, we will be unable to move forward with it.
  12. If you experience any problems during the online submission process please consult the help section of our editorial management system which provides more detailed submission instructions. Alternatively, please contact the journal editorial office for assistance.

Copyright Notice

1. The Author does hereby grant and assign exclusively to the Publisher all rights in the aforenamed Contribution with the full copyright therein, including the right to publish it, in both print and electronic form, as part of the aforenamed Journal in all forms, languages, and media now or hereafter known or developed and the right to license subsidiary rights (such as granting rights to reprint in anthologies issued by other publishers or to photocopy for classroom use).

2. The Author guarantees that he or she is the sole owner of the Contribution and has full authority to make this agreement; that the Contribution does not infringe any copyright, violate any other property rights, contain any scandalous, libelous, or unlawful matter, or make any improper invasion of the privacy of any person; and that the Contribution has not heretofore been published, even in somewhat different form. If the Contribution has been published previously, the Author guarantees that permission has been obtained, and any fee required has been paid, for publication in this Journal and shall submit proof of such permission and any required credit line to the Publisher with the signed agreement. For any copyrighted material included in the Contribution whose reproduction cannot be justified as “fair use,” the Author must obtain permission from the copyright owner for its reproduction in the Journal in both print and electronic form, pay any fee required, and furnish the Publisher with a copy of all documents granting the required permission. The Author agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Publisher against any claim or proceeding undertaken on any of the aforementioned grounds.

3. The Author shall allow the Editor of the Journal and the Publisher to make the Contribution conform to the style of presentation, spelling, capitalization, and usage followed by the Journal. The Author agrees to review and correct the copyedited manuscript and proofs and to return them to the Editor by the date set by the Editor; if the Editor has not received them by that time, production of the issue of the Journal in which the Contribution is to be included may proceed without waiting for the Author’s approval of the manuscript or proofs. If any changes in proofs are made by the Author beyond the correction of printer’s errors, the Publisher has the right to charge the Author for the expense of such changes to the extent that they exceed five percent (5%) of the cost of original composition of the Contribution.

4. The Author shall receive no payment from the Publisher for use of the Contribution. In lieu of payment, contributors will each be provided with two free copies of the issue containing their article and will have the option of purchasing additional copies at a reduced cost for as long as supplies last. For articles written by more than one author, each author will receive two copies of the issue. Authors of Book Reviews will receive one copy of the issue in which their review appears.

5. Upon request of the Author, the Publisher shall grant to the Author, for no fee, a nonexclusive license to republish the Contribution in the same or revised form in any language in a book written or edited by the Author after the issue of the Journal containing the Contribution has been published, subject only to the condition that a credit line, to be supplied by the Publisher, will be printed in the Author’s book to indicate the first publication of the Contribution in the Journal.

6. All fees received by the Publisher from the licensing of subsidiary rights in the Contribution separate from the Journal will be shared equally with the Author and shall be paid annually, by the end of March for fees collected during the preceding calendar year, unless the amount due is less than twenty-five ($25), in which event payment will be deferred until the year in which that total has been accumulated. The Publisher is a member of the Copyright Clearance Center and may license rights to photocopy or electrocopy either directly or through the Center serving as its agent.

7. This agreement shall be construed and interpreted according to the laws of The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and shall be binding upon and inure to the benefit of the parties thereto, their heirs, successors, assigns, and personal representatives. Where the contribution is the product of more than one person, all of the obligations of the Author hereby created shall be deemed to be the joint and several obligations of all such persons.
